Various ocean analysis datasets have been produced by operational centers and research institutions and used for a variety of geoscience studies. Recently geostationary satellites such as Himawari-8 have observed sea surface temperatures at much higher spatiotemporal resolutions of 10 mins. and 2 km than before. To utilize such frequent observations, we have demonstrated an optimal setting for an ensemble Kalman filter-based ocean data assimilation system that assimilates satellite and in-situ observations with a short interval of 1 day (Ohishi et al. 2022a, b). With the enhancement of the numerical computation, we have developed high-resolution systems sufficient to resolve ocean fronts and eddies, and have produced ensemble ocean research analysis datasets in the western North Pacific (WNP) and Maritime Continent (MC) regions, respectively, which are referred to as LETKF-based Ocean Research Analysis (LORA)-WNP and -MC (Ohishi et al. in review). I will present an overview of the development of the ocean data assimilation system, the detail of LORA, and the validation results in R-CCS café.
