Computational Disaster Mitigation and Reduction Research Team (the Oishi team) aims to develop advanced large-scale numerical simulation of natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunami, floods, and inundation for Kobe City and other urban areas in Hyogo Prefecture. Research for urban hazards requires urban models representing the structure and shape of cities in numerical form. However, it takes a long time to develop urban models consisting of buildings, foundations, and infrastructures like bridges, ports, and roads. Therefore, it is indispensable to invent methods that automatically construct urban models from exiting data that is ill-structured. The Oishi team developed a Data Processing Platform (DPP) for such purpose. The DPP makes it possible to automatically create three-dimensional bridge models from engineering drawings (CAD). Recently, the Oishi team has a couple of prominent collaborative researches with Hanshin Expressway Co. Ltd. and the National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management (NILIM). These prominent joint researches achieved solid bridge models for the finite element method (FEM) from CAD. We estimate the remaining life time of bridges by simulating much traffic that has passed over the bridge. This activity expands by cooperative work with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism (MLIT) and newly developed alliances with construction companies, construction consultants, and IT companies.
