The Lightning Imager (LI) onboard the Meteosat Third Generation satellite will provide total lightning observations. The assimilation of such data could improve the thunderstorm prediction accuracy. To prepare the assimilation of LI observations in the French storm-scale regional AROME numerical weather prediction system, an observation operator is required to convert the model variables into a product comparable to the observations. This study focuses on the evaluation of different observation operators from various proxies encountered in the literature and calculated from background fields, i.e. outputs of 1 h AROME forecasts.
