Executive Vice-President Virkkunen of the European Commission Visits R-CCS, Accelerating Future-Oriented Collaboration Between Europe and Japan
JapaneseOn the afternoon of May 13, 2025, Executive Vice President of the European Commission, Ms. Henna Virkkunen, and her delegation visited the RIKEN Center for Computational Science (R-CCS) in Kobe, Japan.
After touring the operational supercomputer Fugaku, the delegation engaged in a discussion session. Dr. Satoshi Matsuoka, Director of R-CCS, introduced cutting-edge initiatives aimed at realizing future platforms integrating HPC, AI, and quantum computing. These included the FugakuNEXT[1] project, AI for Science, and the JHPC-Quantum project[2]. He also highlighted ongoing collaborations with European research institutions and supercomputing centers, such as the HANAMI Project[3].
Executive Vice President shared insights into the growing momentum of digital innovation activities in Europe, including AI Factories and quantum computing. She also highlighted the shared anticipation for future-focused efforts, grounded in the enduring partnership between Europe and Japan.
