RIKEN Center for Computational Science(R-CCS) offers an internship program targeting graduate students (Ph.D program) affiliated with overseas universities or institutions. The internship program is a project fostering researchers dedicated to HPC (High Performance Computer) technology and computational science with the aim to orient interns to R&D in leading-edge computational science by providing them with an opportunity to work in R-CCS research teams for a better understanding of computational science technology.

Eligibility

Applicants must belong to a university whose head or representative can issue a formal letter of request on behalf of applicants (Ph.D. program). PhD-level students with fundamental knowledge in the field of computational science and with a specific research focus are desirable.

Internship Details
Internship period Applicants and hosting research teams may set appropriate periods by mutual agreement for the internship duration, up to 85 days between April 14, 2026 and March 18, 2027.
*Note that for those from overseas, a period of 4 months is currently required for acceptance procedures from the time of selection to the start of internship. A substantial amount of time is required especially for procedures for immigration formalities.
Admission numbers Term 1 (Internship starts between Tue, April 14 and Mon, August 31, 2026), up to 20 students.
Term 2 (Internship starts after Tue, September 1, 2026. *It is necessary to finish the internship by Thurs, March 18), up to 20 students.
Approximately 40 students will be accepted in total. However, the number of participants may vary depending on the situation.
Program details Details are subject to guidelines determined by the hosting research team/unit.
Working hours Interns must work on every RIKEN working day during the internship period.
Daily schedule: 9:00 to 17:20 (Lunch break: 12:00 to 12:50)
Screening Document screening will be carried out after the application deadlines: December 1, 2025 for Term 1 (Internship from April 14 to August 31, 2026) and February 9, 2026 for Term 2 (Internship from September 1, 2026, to March 18, 2027). Please note that Term 2 screening will start after February 9, 2026.

Please take into consideration the length of time required to complete the acceptance process. It currently takes about 4 months from the time of selection to the start of the internship (for approval of "Fugaku" use and immigration procedures).

Expenses and allowance Payment of expenses to interns based on the RIKEN internship regulations

Travel expenses
Compensation will be provided for actual cost of travel between the intern’s university or home, and the location of the hosting research team for one round trip only.

Commuting expenses
Compensation will be provided for actual cost of daily commuting fares between the intern’s lodging and R-CCS for the number of attendance on a monthly basis up to a maximum of 45,000 yen per month.

Lodging expenses
R-CCS will provide accommodation (furnished apartment for single use) for the interns.

Internship allowance
3,000 yen per day (in attendance)
Note: Internship allowance is exempt from tax and is equivalent to food expenses.
Notes
  • -Do not plan any academic or private affairs during the internship. Make sure to engage yourself fully in the internship during the term. If you have high priority academic or private affairs, plan to start your internship after them or finish it before them. Do not let academic or private affairs interfere with the internship.

  • -Do not invite your family or friends during the internship period for any activities such as sightseeing.

  • -In principle, arrive the day before and depart the day after the internship period.

  • -In principle, interns come to Japan from the country where their university is located and return to the same country. However, if there is a possibility that you may not be able to return to the country of your university due to visa (status of residence) renewal or other reasons, you may not be able to participate in the internship program. Please try to avoid overlapping the period of your visa renewal and the internship program.

  • -No cancellations due to personal reasons will be accepted, and any airfare or other cancellation fees incurred will be borne by the applicant.
