Report on International HPC Summer School 2025
JapaneseThe International HPC Summer School 2025 was held over six days from July 5 to 11 at the Eurostars Universal Lisboa Hotel in Lisbon, Portugal. Representing Japan, nine students selected through a national process participated, accompanied by three mentors: Dr. Toshiyuki Imamura (Team Principal at RIKEN R-CCS and school organizer), Mr. Amuro Harawa (SkyDrive Inc., former participant), and Mr. Jiachao Zhang (Fujitsu Limited, former participant). Approximately 120 researchers and students from the co-hosting countries gathered for this international event.

The program featured a broad range of lectures centered on computational science, covering cutting-edge topics in natural and applied sciences. Lively Q&A sessions and discussions followed each lecture. Participants also engaged in "electrical poster sessions," where they first gave lightning talks on their research and then interacted directly with other participants to deepen academic exchange.
Hands-on sessions included practical exercises using supercomputers, focusing on topics such as hybrid parallel programming and HPC with Python. One of the distinctive features of the school was the mentorship system. Small groups of participants were assigned dedicated mentors (faculty or staff), with whom they could discuss research topics and career paths in a supportive environment. Multiple mentoring sessions were held throughout the week, facilitating in-depth discussions and helping participants build international networks and envision their future careers.
A cultural and networking highlight of the program was a river cruise through Lisbon, which allowed participants to experience local culture while engaging in informal exchanges.
Voices from Participants:
• “The Resume/CV Review was especially valuable. I received practical advice directly from researchers and professionals active in North America—insights that would be hard to gain just by searching online. For students aiming to build a career abroad, this was a rare and meaningful opportunity.”
• “The latest advancements in GPU technologies were eye-opening, particularly for someone like me working primarily in CPU-based environments. Learning about methods that emulate double-precision arithmetic without dedicated hardware gave me new perspectives on future research directions.”
• “While participants came from diverse fields, our shared foundation in HPC enabled deep technical discussions. I gained concrete implementation tips and resource usage strategies, all of which I can apply immediately in my research and lab work back in Japan.”
• “IHPCSS 2025 offered a dense and inspiring experience—connecting fundamental theory, implementation, international collaboration, and future planning in one seamless flow. I now aim to pursue a career bridging HPC and AI to tackle urban-scale social challenges through scalable computational technologies.”
The school proved to be an invaluable opportunity for developing the next generation of global HPC talent and strengthening international collaboration among researchers.
