2024 R-CCS HPC Computational Science Internship Program (Kobe/Tokyo)

The RIKEN Center for Computational Science (R-CCS) offers an internship program targeting graduate students or technical college students “KOSEN” (above 4th year) residing in Japan, which is outlined as follows.

As a project that fosters researchers dedicated to HPC (High Performance Computer) technology and computational science, this internship program aims to deepen interns’ understanding of R&D in leading-edge computational science and technology by providing them with an opportunity to work in R-CCS research teams/units.

Date Applicants and hosting research teams/units may set appropriate periods by mutual agreement for a duration of 2 weeks to 1 month between July 25, 2024 and March 21, 2025.
Note: Upon prior consultation with the host team/unit, the internship may be extended for another 2 months at most.

Eligibility

Graduate students ( Host: Research team, each division), technical college students “KOSEN” ( above 4th year) ( Host: Operations and Computer Technologies Division) who reside in Japan and meet one of the following criteria :

  • Applicants must belong to universities/KOSEN which recognize internships at RIKEN on their module system.
  • Applicants must belong to universities/KOSEN whose head or other authorized person can issue a formal letter of request on behalf of applicants.

Internship Details
Internship period Applicants and hosting research teams/units may set appropriate periods by mutual agreement for a duration of 2 weeks to 1 month between July 25, 2024 and March 21, 2025.
Note: Upon prior consultation with the host team/unit, the internship may be extended for up to 2 months.
Number to be admitted Approximately 50
Program details Details are subject to guidelines of hosting research team/unit.
Working hours Interns must work on every RIKEN working day during internship period.
Daily schedule: 9:00 to 17:20 (Lunch break: 12:00 to 12:50)
Application Screening Screening of application documents will be carried out after the deadline for this call. Results will be announced within 3 weeks after the deadline.

    Graduate students (Host: Research team, each division) up to 15 students
    Technical college students “KOSEN” (above 4th year/Host: Operations and Computer Technologies Division) up to 10 students
    Internship will begin from Thursday, July 25 (from Monday, August 26 for international students) at the earliest.
  • Term 2:【Application deadline】Monday, July 1, 2024 at noon　Closed
    Graduate students (Host: Research team, each division) up to 15 students
    Technical college students “KOSEN” (above 4th year/Host: Operations and Computer Technologies Division) up to 10 students
    Internship will begin from Monday, August 26 (from Thursday, September 26 for international students) at the earliest.
  • Term 3: Depending on the number of applications and positions filled in the first and second terms, we will consider additional application periods or accept applications on an as-needed basis.
    Final closing date: November 28, 2024 (Thursday) at noon.
    Selection will be conducted at any time, and applications will be closed when the maximum number is reached.
    The internship starts at least 2 months after the application submission date. The final day of the internship must be by March 21, 2025 (Friday).

Expenses and allowance
  1. Commuting expenses: Daily actual commuting fares for the number of working days are compensated on a monthly basis up to a maximum of 45,000 yen per month.
  2. Accommodation expenses: If required during your internship, we will provide our arranged accommodation at no cost to you. If you would like to select your own accommodation, actual expenses are compensated up to a maximum of 3,500 yen per day.
  3. Travel expenses: If you join internship from a distant location and need local accommodation, actual travel expenses between intern’s university and location of the hosting research team/unit are compensated for one round trip only.
  4. Internship allowance: 3,000 yen per working day for those who need accommodation; 1,000 yen per working day for those who commute from their own homes.
Notes
  • Do not plan any academic or private affairs during the internship. Make sure to engage yourself fully in the internship during the term.
  • If higher priority is placed on the academic or private affairs, plan to start your internship after them or finish it before them. Do not let the academic or private affairs interfere with the internship.
  • Do not invite your family or friends during the internship period for any activities such as sightseeing.
  • In principle, arrive the day before and depart the day after the internship period.
