Abstract
The Observing Systems Simulation Experiment (OSSE) is a widely applied method in numerical weather prediction (NWP), evaluating virtual observing systems with data assimilation. It helps future planning of observing platforms and sensor designs and is a powerful approach applicable to various fields beyond NWP. OSSE can also be designed to evaluate the numerical weather prediction system itself including data assimilation methods. This presentation summarizes the value of OSSE by showing various OSSE examples in NWP to evaluate virtual observing systems that have not been developed or used yet.
