Director Satoshi Matsuoka (RIKEN R-CCS), has been selected for the Outstanding Leadership in HPC of the 2025 HPCwire Readers’Choice Awards. They are revealed each year to kick off the annual supercomputing conference, which showcases high performance computing,
networking, storage, and data analysis, which took place in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, from November 16 to 21.
The HPCwire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards, presented by HPCwire (USA), a globally recognized online publication dedicated to High Performance Computing (HPC), honor the most significant breakthroughs in the HPC field each year. The winners are selected through a process involving both the magazine’s worldwide readership and its editorial team. This year marks the 22nd edition of the awards.

Director Matsuoka is responsible for developing the supercomputer Fugaku, which has become the fastest supercomputer in the world in all four major supercomputer rankings in 2020 and 2021 (TOP500, HPCG, HPL-AI, Graph500). Matsuoka oversees a multitude of ongoing cutting-edge HPC research, including investigating Post-Moore era computing and the future FugakuNEXT, which led to this award.

Comments from Director Satoshi Matsuoka

"It is a great honor to receive this Outstanding Leadership Award, especially as it recognizes contributions made within the community. This year, R-CCS received three major awards at SC25: the Best Paper Award, the Best Reproducibility Advancement Award, and the Best Research Poster Award. This recognition stems not only from R-CCS members being active at the world's highest level, but also from our initiatives leading globally renowned projects such as “Fugaku NEXT,” AI for Science, and the Quantum-Supercomputer Collaboration Platform. I believe the community's acknowledgment of leadership within these projects contributed to this award. In that sense, I see this award not as a personal award, but as one achieved through the collective efforts of every member of R-CCS. We will continue striving forward."

Comments from Mr. Tom Tabor, CEO of TCI Media, which publishes HPCwire

"Across the globe, grand challenge problems are being tackled — and often solved — thanks to HPC, now amplified and accelerated by AI. The 2025 Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards truly capture this dynamic era of innovation. We extend our sincere gratitude and warmest, congratulations to all of this year’s winners."
