A New Mechanism Supporting Reputation-Based Cooperation - Not only whether you help, but whether you are helped -

An international research team including Yohsuke Murase, Senior Research Scientist at the Discrete Event Simulation Research Team, RIKEN Center for Computational Science (R-CCS), has uncovered a new mechanism that may enable the evolution of reputation-based cooperation. The team combined theoretical analysis of mathematical models with large-scale simulations using RIKEN’s supercomputer Fugaku.
The findings advance our understanding of how reputation-based cooperation can evolve. They may also contribute to a better understanding of how reputations are formed in human societies and how such processes can give rise to collective behaviors such as conformity, cooperation, and exclusion.

The results will be published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) on August 28, 2026.
