The RIKEN Center for Computational Science (R-CCS) offers an internship program targeting graduate , undergraduate , and advanced course students at a technical college (KOSEN)  in Japan, which is outlined as follows.
As a project that fosters researchers dedicated to HPC (High Performance Computer) technology and computational science, this internship program aims to deepen interns’ understanding of R&D in leading-edge computational science and technology by providing them with an opportunity to work in R-CCS research teams/units.

Note: Upon prior consultation with the host team/unit, the internship may be extended for another 2 months at most.

Eligibility

Graduate, undergraduate students, and advanced course students at a technical college (KOSEN)  in Japan and meet the following criteria :

  • Applicants must be students affiliated with a university or a college of technology in Japan and fall into one of the following categories: graduate students (doctoral or master’s programs), undergraduate students, or first- or second-year advanced course students at a technical college (KOSEN).
  • Applicants must be able to obtain an official letter of request from the head of their institution, or a person authorized by the head. 
  • Undergraduate students must have academic knowledge equivalent to master's degree and a letter of recommendation from their academic supervisor.

Internship Details
Internship period Applicants and hosting research teams/units may set appropriate periods by mutual agreement for a duration of 2 weeks to 1 month between July 22, 2026 and March 18, 2027.
Note: Upon prior consultation with the host team/unit, the internship may be extended for another 2 months at most.
Number to be admitted Maximum 30 students will be accepted in total. (Term 1 up to 15 students, Term 2 up to 15 students)
However, the number of participants may vary depending on the situation.
Program details Details are subject to guidelines of hosting research team/unit.
Working hours In principle, the intern’s presence is required for the duration of the internship program with the exception of the holidays designated by RIKEN
The intern's working hours each day are from 9:00 am to 5:20 pm. (There is a rest period from 12:00 pm to 12:50 pm.)
Application Screening Screening of application documents will be carried out after the deadline for this call. Results will be announced within 3 weeks after the deadline.

【Application deadline】
  • Term1: Monday, May 18, 2026 at noon  

          Internship start date: Any date between July 22 (Wed) and August 21 (Fri)
      
    (For applicants requiring export control screening: between August 18(Tue) and September 25 (Fri))

  • Term2: Tuesday, June 30, 2026 at noon

          Internship start date: On or after August 25 (Tue)
      
    (For applicants requiring export control screening: on or after September 29 (Tue))
     
    The internship must be completed by March 18, 2027.

  • Term3: Depending on the number of applications and positions filled in the first and second terms, we will consider additional application periods or accept applications on an as-needed basis.
    Selection will be conducted at any time, and applications will be closed when the maximum number is reached.
    The internship starts at least 2 months after the application submission date.
      
  • *It is important to note the start date, as the internship must be completed by Thursday, March 18, 2027 regardless of whether it takes place in Term 2 or Term 3.

Expenses and allowance
  1. Commuting expenses: Daily actual commuting fares for the number of working days are compensated on a monthly basis up to a maximum of 45,000 yen per month.
  2. Accommodation expenses: If required during your internship, we will provide our arranged accommodation at no cost to you.
  3. Travel expenses: If you join internship from a distant location and need local accommodation, actual travel expenses between intern’s university and location of the hosting research team/unit are compensated for one round trip only.
  4. Internship allowance: 3,000 yen per working day for those who need accommodation; 1,000 yen per working day for those who commute from their own homes.
Notes
  • Do not plan any academic or private affairs during the internship. Make sure to engage yourself fully in the internship during the term.
  • If higher priority is placed on the academic or private affairs, plan to start your internship after them or finish it before them. Do not let the academic or private affairs interfere with the internship.
  • It is not permitted to invite your family members or friends to stay at the accommodation for sightseeing or other purposes during the internship period.
  • Please confirm with the Internship Hosting Desk in advance regarding the dates of arrival and departure.
